Continuing our series on the ancient tribes of Italy we present the Etruscans... the 5th in a series of 8 articles

The Piceni

There is not much written about them, as they were a small tribe that did not exist for a very long time. They inhabited a compact region near the North Adriatic Sea.

Their presence in this area spanned from the 9th to the 3rd Centuries BC  , reaching its zenith during the 5th and 6th Centuries BC. Over time, the Piceni tribe assimilated with various neighboring cultures, including the Celts from the north, the maritime Siracusani of Dionisio, and the Etruscans.

The Piceni tribe, with their fully developed agricultural system and commercial economy, and renowned artisan skills, met their fate when Rome defeated them in a significant battle in 268 BC. The mythology around them is that a woodpecker ( picus lat. ) led them to the land Picenum. Thus, they are known as those of the woodpecker.

Both men and women dressed in wool. Men wore weapons and ornaments of bronze and iron, and women wore bracelets, girdles, and ornamental pendants.  Today, there are people who bear the name Piceni. It's fascinating to think that they might be the living descendants of this ancient tribe, connecting us to their rich history.

Introduction to Italian Music - Folk Instruments… the 2nd in a series of 6 articles

Italian Folk Music

Italian folk instruments, deeply rooted in the country's regional traditions and historical past, are a testament to Italy's rich and diverse cultural landscape. Each region proudly showcases its unique sounds and instruments, many of which have a history dating back centuries.

The zampogna, or Italian bagpipe, is a prime example of this. Often associated with shepherds and pastoral life, its haunting melodies are a staple of Christmas in southern Italy, particularly in Calabria and Abruzzo, where traditional players known as zampognari keep age-old tunes alive.

On the March 2025 Phil~italy group tour stopped for two nights in Agnone, in the region of Molise.  Two expert zampognari (bagpipe players) played traditional folkloric songs, dedicated to one of the travelers, Maria, who was born and raised in Agnone, before from emigrating to America. We visited the famous Marinelli Bell Foundry and Di Pasquo Cheese Factory in Agnone the next morning

Another cherished Italian folk instrument is the tamburello, a hand drum akin to a tambourine, often a key player in traditional dances such as the tarantella and pizzica. Originating in the vibrant southern regions like Puglia and Campania, the tamburello injects a fast-paced, rhythmic energy that sets the tempo for these lively folk dances. It's not just a musical tool but an integral part of the festive gatherings and celebrations, with skilled players unleashing rapid, complex rhythms that embody cultural pride and musical dexterity.

String instruments also have a significant role in Italian folk music, with the chitarra battente, a type of folk guitar traditionally used in the South, standing out. Unlike classical guitars, it produces a percussive, jangly sound that perfectly complements lively dances and songs. Folk musicians often used the chitarra battente in street performances or to entertain at community gatherings, showcasing its unique sound.
